The most important questions to answer while you kick off your campus search are: "What do I want to learn?" and "How do I want to learn it?" It is important that your colleges of choice offer classes that will fit your needs. You may find that both Hometown-U and Dream College offer classes in your field, but that while Hometown-U has only 20 students per professor, Dream College has 200 students per professor. You may also find that while Dream College teaches the theory of your field, and your local Community College offers hands-on courses better suited to your needs.
Another important factor to consider is the involvement level of the student government. Participating in student government provides experience with leadership and decision making that may be crucial to your field. If you are interested in pursuing a career in law, business or politics, whether or not a campus has an active student government is an important factor.
As you go through school, you will need to supplement your income from financial aid and scholarships through work. If you can find entry level work or internships in your field, you will have a robust resume to complement your degree. Look at campuses’ local newspaper for employment opportunities. Also talk with the career center on campus about work in your field. If you are deciding between two equally interesting colleges, knowing what the job market is like may make the decision easier.
Don't forget to take a look at the campus diversity figures. College provides a unique opportunity to interact with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. If this is important to you, be sure to compare diversity figures before making your decision.
